At W.D. Matthews Machinery, our people are the heart of everything we do. For more than 85 years, the company’s story has been written by hardworking men and women who not only serve our customers but pass on their knowledge and values to the next generation.
This year, we’re proud to highlight a special story: a grandfather and grandson who exemplify what it means to be part of the W.D. Matthews family.
Dan Sr. has been part of the team for 27 years, specializing in heavy equipment like telehandlers and larger forklifts. When asked what keeps him motivated after so many years, he says, “Seeing the younger guys catch on, ask questions, and get better every day.” He remembers the bigger machines as the most fun to work on, and jokes that his time at W.D. Matthews has shaped him into a grumpy, but wiser, version of himself.
Now his grandson Daniel, still in 11th grade, is following in his footsteps through our Registered Apprenticeship Program. Daniel shares, “It’s pretty cool having my grandfather here. I get to pick on him a little, and he lets me!” Already, he’s learning to service machines, including a remote-controlled telehandler, which he describes as “amazing.” He’s also taking automotive and welding courses, building skills that go beyond the shop.
Dan Sr. is proud to see Daniel growing into the work: “It makes me happy to see him in here, working on the equipment. It’s fun to watch him learn.” And Daniel is equally excited about carrying on the family legacy: “I definitely want to be here as long as he is. I like this work, and it gives me a fair chance to build my future.”
